Coastal flood stories

6th December 2013

If you were away from your radio yesterday afternoon and last night, you could easily have missed the news...

Whitby Harbour, Scarborough's South Bay and Bridlington Harbour flooded at high tide yesterday afternoon.

It was described as the most serious tidal surge in more than 30 years.

A tidal surge is caused a number of factors coming together.

Firstly the weather - an area of low pressure with strong winds whips up the sea. It drags up the sea level. If the wind is strong and blowing towards the coast AND it co-incides with high tide you get a VERY high tide: "A tidal surge" and the result is often coastal flooding.

Today, I've been getting your reaction and hearing your stories.

Julie Dyl is the owner of Rags Hotel and Restaurant on the harbourside in Bridlington.

They carried on serving customers as the water came in!

Here's Julie:

Neil Hodgson is the co-owner of the Sandside Cafe at Sandsend.

His business escaped unharmed, but the beach has never looked like this before.

Here's Neil:

Snowdrop Appeal - Christmas Events

5th December 2013

The Snowdrop Appeal TileThe Snowdrop Appeal was launched to fund a new Maternity Bereavement Suite at Scarborough Hospital.

The £120,000 space will be private, away from the main labour ward, for families who lose a baby during birth or pregnancy.

Maya Richardson is a regular guest on my show keeping us up-to-date on the fundraising.

This month she'd got news of a new total, her own fancy dress dip plans and lots of other festive events.

She started by telling me more about the appeal:
