Yorkshire Coast Radio is proud to support Armed Forces Day in Scarborough on Saturday, 27th June 2015.

It's an opportunity to do two things. Firstly, to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Secondly, it gives the nation an opportunity to Show Your Support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.

In our seventh year here at Scarborough we are paying tribute to veterans of World War Two and with a BBMF Spitfire Display we will remember the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

•           RAF/BBMF Spitfire Display with Battle of Britain full invasion stripes (tbc)

•           RNLI/ Search & Rescue Helicopter demonstration – joint exercise by the new partnership of HMCG Sikorsky helicopter and Scarborough RNLI

The highlight of the afternoon will be a 15 minute aeronautical display by the world's only aerobatic formation wingwalking team.  The wingwalkers will perform a breathtaking sequence of acrobatic manoeuvres and handstands whilst strapped to the top wings of the team's beautiful 1940’s Boeing Stearman biplanes.

The team pilots fly an energetic routine of dazzling aerobatics and close formation flypasts as the wingwalkers wave at the crowd. These manoeuvres include, loops, rolls, stall turns and even inverted flight!  During all of this, the wingwalkers experience speeds of up to 150 mph and 'G' forces of up to 4G!

Sandside will be a nostalgic walk down memory lane dedicated to WW2/1940’s including;

  • A vintage market brought to you by AdVINTAGEous (Fairs & Events)
  • To create a nostalgic atmosphere there will be musical entertainment by Cherie Lawrence 1940’s vintage singer, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Pipes & Drums Band, the Yorkshire Volunteers Band and Scarborough Fair Collection cinema organ melodies.
  • A range of vintage military vehicles and cars
  • Performance area for the local cadet forces to exhibit various activities including a gun run, medical and cooking demonstrations
  • Visit The Coronia and The Regal Lady – original pleasure steamers berthed at Scarborough harbour, which were requisitioned at the start of the second world war and that took part in Operation Dynamo - assisting in the evacuation of British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during May and June 1940

Foreshore will house military recruitment and welfare associations’ exhibiters and the bottom of St Nicholas Gardens will act as the Formal area where activities include:

  • A formal opening and welcoming address by the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough
  • Standards, Veterans and Cadets Parade led by the Band of the Yorkshire Volunteers
  • Presentation (with citation) of AFD flag to a Veteran
  • Service of Thanksgiving led by Revd Martyn Dunning, Vicar of Scarborough
  • One Minute Silence
  • Battle of Britain remembrance poem and release of white doves

  • The Queens Own Yeomanry: Climbing tower, inflatable assault course, various green vehicles including RWMIK that will lead the Veterans parade.
    • Military Adventure activities on the beach
  • RAF Red Arrows and the Lancaster Bomber flight simulators

Join us for another memorable day and ‘show your support’ to say thank you to the men and women of the British Armed Forces community that includes serving personnel and their families, veterans and the cadet forces.
