Armed Forces Day

Yorkshire Coast Radio is proud to support Armed Forces Day in Scarborough on Saturday, 28 June 2014.

It's an opportunity to do two things. Firstly, to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Secondly, it gives the nation an opportunity to Show Your Support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.

Building upon the success of last year, the event promises to be another spectacular tribute to those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. Come and join us as we say thank you to our past, present and future uniformed personnel.

The day’s action packed programme will get underway with 1Bn Yorkshire Regiment exercising their Freedom to march proudly through the town displaying the four Colours of the Regiment. They will be welcomed and inspected by The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough at the opening ceremony before falling out to enjoy the rest of the day’s activities.

Highlights will include a display by the much loved and admired Vulcan Bomber XH558 the last of its type still flying. Arguably the world’s greatest aircraft, the display is expected to draw huge crowds to the town. Other aerial highlights include a display by the RAF Tucano, sporting a special commemorative poppy design on its fuselage and a flypast by the historic Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane aircraft that make up the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

In support of the Yorkshire Regiment Freedom Parade there will be a large military representation from over nine army regiments who will be displaying military vehicles, weaponry and explaining to the public their roles in the UK Armed Forces commitment abroad and at home.

To end what is set to be another fantastic Armed Forces Day, head over to the North side of town and join some of the biggest names in British classical music as they perform a special tribute to the UK’s Armed Forces against the stunning backdrop of Scarborough Open Air Theatre on the evening of 28 June.

Singer and television and radio broadcaster Aled Jones will host and perform in a spectacular Last Night of the Proms concert, featuring the beautiful and harmonious voices of the Military Wives Choirs York, Britain’s most exciting young mezzo soprano Laura Wright and Welsh male choral group Only Men Aloud.  Musical accompaniment will be provided by the National Symphony Orchestra and the concert will finish with a grand firework finale.

The concert has been planned specifically to coincide with Armed Forces Day and Scarborough Borough Council has arranged for everyone buying a ticket for the concert to be able to make a voluntary donation to the national Armed Forces charity SSAFA.
