Yorkshire Coast Radio todays speaks on behalf of thousands of people in the area and asks Scarborough Borough Council to save the Futurist Theatre.

The Futurist Theatre is the only venue, with its 2150 seating capacity, to attract the big names such as Rob Brydon who performed to a packed house, however its uncertain future makes it difficult to get promoters to commit to bringing the stars to town.
If Scarborough is to attract names such as Rob Brydon, it needs a venue like the Futurist Theatre.
For several years, Scarborough Borough Council have leased the Futurist Theatre to Barry and Brenda Stead who have provided cinema and shows all year round, including a number of very successful summer line-ups. In the last few weeks a lease was issued which gives the Futurist a future until December 2010, but after that the future is unknown, and becuase of that, the opportunity to attract more big names to visit the town will be lost.
This weekends sell-out shows prove that when the big names visit Scarborough, people flock to see them.
Rob Brydon said that the Futurist Theatre must be saved. More than 2000 people in the theatre that night agreed, and on behalf of them and thousands of others that want to see the best names and shows staged at the Futurist Theatre, we ask Scarborough Borough Council to put a stop to the uncertainty and commit to the future of this much loved venue.
Show your support for our campaign to keep the Futurist Theatre and to invest in its future to restore it to its former glory, making it an entertainment venue fit for the 21st century, and one that will attract the biggest names to perform in Scarborough, by completing the form below. Your details will not be published, but will be passed to Scarborough Borough Council to show them public support for the Futurist Theatre.
I would like Scarborough Borough Council to save the Futurist Theatre and restore it to its former glory to make it an entertainment venue fit for the 21st century.
Listen again to our interview with Barrie Stead from the Futurist Theatre.
Listen to David Archer's, Strategic Director with Scarborough Council speak about the future of the Futurist Theatre.
Here's a selection of some of the comments received so far...
Ever since I was a small boy, the Futurist has always delivered TOP NAMES!!! It's like the West End of the East Coast!!! Do not stop bringing the celebs to Scarborough!
Take the cladding off!
I have seen some great shows over the last thirty years or so, and it would be a great shame to lose this facility.
It's the only place that can house the bigger acts and has the added benefit of being handy for all to get to.
The Futurist is the only venue in the area that can accommodate a large audience and needs to be kept. However, it does need to be brought into the 21st Century, both inside and out. As a cinema, it needs a better screen, and for both cinema and theatre a more efficient heating system. Please save this venue.
Please save and restore the Futurist. It's part of Scarborough's history
I can't understand why the council hasn't restored this building already considering what it brings into our town
Scarborough needs a venue for bigger names, it's sad to see the Futurist in its current sorry state. It needs a revamp and some help from the council. It would be a shame to see it disappear.
Scarborough has very few major theatrical entertainment venues. The Futurist should be restored to its former glory. It is in a far more accessible and convenient location for local and tourist customers, much more than the Spa and Scarborough, as a major tourist venue, needs the Futurist more that ever before.
Hope the Futurist can be saved. Money should not be spent on the Open Air Theatre which will only be used for a maximum of three months a year.
I've seen some wonderful shows at the Futurist and Scarborough would be losing one of its few cultural assets if it were to lose this. Once it's gone that's it - it would be unlikely that Scarborough would ever have the opportunity to re-establish such an asset.
Having grown up on the Yorkshire coast I can't believe anyone would even contemplate closing the Futurist. It is a Scarborough institution.
The Futurist is invaluable to us, money would be well spent by investing in the Futurist, compared to the open air theatre plans!
This is the only venue for miles around that can cater for such great entertainment, proven by this weekend. KEEP FUTURIST FOR SCARBOROUGH AND FILEY
I would like to see the Futurist survive, because we need to keep great entertainment here in Scarborough, improving the facilities would give great benefit to the theatre's future and give it chance to attract bigger and better acts to attract custom. I've I give my whole support.
Please think again about closing the Futurist - The Spa and an open air theatre could never compete. With money spent on it, it would pay for its self with big shows and big showbiz artists. Listen to the people of Scarborough and what they want. DONT CLOSE THE FUTURIST.
The Futurist is a local landmark and we should be keeping it active and not letting it go to rack and ruin like most of the other empty buildings in Scarborough SAVE THE FUTURIST NOW!!!!!
I have been to see some great shows at the Futurist and it is a much needed venue for the town. If it were updated somewhat then we might see some big names returning here again
The Futurist is a historic building that over the decades has seen some fantastic acts. The council of Scarborough should be doing more to save such buildings after all it is buildings like that, that make Scarborough what it is known for, a town with a historical past I am all for sprucing up the town to fit in with the modern day but the futurist should be part of that plan. Generations before us have the pleasure of remembering the good times they had there, so lets let the next generation and the one after that have the same stories to tell.
Too much of Scarborough is dying. You need to keep it alive!
