Employee Fraud on the Rise in East Yorkshire
31st August 2012 3:43 pm
A report from the UK's Fraud Prevention Service indicates that fraud committed by employees is increasing at an alarming rate.
The report compares findings from the Staff Fraud Database during the first half of 2012 against the outputs from the same period for 2011. The Fraud Prevention Service say that alarmingly there was a 52% increase in employee frauds recorded during 2012. They also say that precarious economic and employment conditions are considered to be part of the reason for the significant increase, with staff working harder, often for smaller rewards. Adding that this can create resentment and some people resorting to fraud out of a misplaced sense of entitlement.
The Bussiness Crime Reduction Centre say a positive view on the increase is that businesses, particularly larger corporates, are more able to detect and record employee fraud than in previous years. It is believed that without investment in counter fraud measures, undetected employee fraud has been damaging businesses for years.
David Ransom, Director of the Business Crime Reduction Centre, a partnership between the Yorkshire and Humber region‟s police forces and charity People United Against Crime, which was established to advise small businesses on security threats including fraud said: “Fraud committed inside a business is a threat that must be taken more seriously than ever before. In a challenging environment of constantly developing technologies, economic hard times and a scarcity of employment, small and medium employers (SME's) that do not take this threat seriously must recognise that the dangers they face in terms of their financial well-being, ability to operate legally and their reputation are significant.”
The Business Crime Reduction Centre say that (BCRC) in partnership with the Humberside Police Authority they are hosting a free seminar to assist SME‟s in Yorkshire and Humber region to avoid the risks posed by fraud. Expert speakers will discuss insider threats, cybercrime attacks, identity theft and account takeover.
The event is for Businesses in East Yorkshire and will be held at the Humberside Police Authority in Hull on Wednesday 19th September, starting at 8.30am and finishing at 12.30pm. To register for this free event or to find out more information please visit www.bcrc-uk.org.
The Business Crime Reduction Centre says it offers small and medium employers a „one-stop-shop‟ for crime reduction advice. They add that through BCRC, specially trained Police Community Support Officers from the regions four police forces conduct physical and cyber security surveys of each business and report any vulnerabilities with recommendations including the introduction of staff policies and procedures in order to reduce the threats.
They add that the Business Crime Reduction Centre is delivered in partnership with Yorkshire-based charity, People United Against Crime (PUAC) and South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Humberside Police forces. BCRC is part financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme 2007-2013.
